How To Sea Trial a Boat - Part 1 - Trailer

A sea trial is a very important part of buying a boat.  Both new and used boats should be sea trialed.  The first step in sea trialing a boat is checking the trailer.  Just like the boat, the trailer is a very important part of the boat.  You cannot use the boat unless the trailer is in good, working order.  Here are the things that I like to do when I am checking my trailer for a routine inspection.

  • Trailer
    • Check the following
      • Tires
        • Tread remaining
        • Cracking
      • Barings
        • Wheels spin freely
        • Wheels do not make excessive noise
        • Wheels do not move side to side or shake
      • Light Operation
        • Lights are sealed
        • All bulbs work
        • Each signal works properly
          • Headlights - Steady on
          • Blinkers work corresponding with the correct side
      • Rust
      • Paint
      • Coupler
        • Locking mechanism
      • Brakes
        • Brake lines
        • Brake fluid
        • Emergency wire (if equipped)
        • Brake controller and wire in good, working order
      • Winch
        • Strap
        • Wheel
        • Locking pin
        • Hook
      • Bunks
        • Carpet
        • Wood
        • Bolts
        • Welds on brackets
    • Road Test
      • Trailer does not bounce excessively with load
      • Brakes aid correctly in stopping trailer
      • Brakes do not stick when taking off from a stop
      • Trailer brake controller is in working order
