Pick One -- Driving With the Sticks or Wheel

In an earlier post I explained how to walk a twin engine boat sideways without the use of bow thrusters.  After some thought, I decided that my explanation may lead to some confusion.  Using the combination of the wheel and throttles is one of the only cases that you should be using both of them at the same time in close quarters.  It is paramount that before you throw off the lines, you decide which you are going to use.  If you are want to use the wheel, you should just use the throttles to shift into and out of gear.  If you want to use the throttles, you should have the wheel straight and use ONLY the throttles.  The use of both of them will lead to unexpected things happening, even loss of control.

My suggestion, use the throttles. From past experience, you will have much more control over the boat if you are using the throttles.  When you are driving a new boat or a boat that you are unfamiliar with, take some time out in open water or in a quiet cove where you can experiment and see how the boat reacts to different situations and various amounts of throttle as every boat is different.

Stay tuned for more later about handling a twin engine boat.  Trust me, its actually easier that you think.
