Why Boats Catch on Fire

Below is a breakdown of statistically why boats catch on fire.

  • 30% - Shorts in DC (12 volt) wiring
  • 24% - Engine/transmission overheating
  • 14% - Other DC electrical problems
  • 11% - AC (120 volt) electrical problems
  • 8% - Fuel leaks
  • 13% - Other
Five things that you can do today to keep your boat from catching on fire:
  1. Make sure that every piece of electrical equipment aboard has a proper fuse of an appropriate size
  2. Check if anything is wired directly to the batteries and, if it is, add a proper fuse or circuit breaker
  3. Change your impeller if you have not done so in the past two years
  4. Take the electric space heater off your boat
  5. Check for burn marks on the shore power plug that indicate arcing and replace your shore power cord and/or your shore power inlet if you find any
