Draft - Your Number One Choice in Keeping You Afloat

What is the number one reason that boats run aground? If you want to think about it in VERY simple terms, its because the draft of the boat is greater than the amount of water that is there.

You would be amazed at how many people don't understand the meaning of draft and what it actually does.  Most will see it on a specification sheet and just see it as another measurement that will never make sense to them.   In reality, draft is one of the most important measurements of a boat.

Draft: The depth of the water needed to float a boat or ship.

How the draft is measured: Draft is the distance from the waterline to the lowest part of the boat, the "part" that sits deepest in the water.

Now that the term has been explained, stay tuned to find out how to safely operate your boat, knowing the draft, in shallow waters.
