Statistics - Vessel Types Involved in Accidents

Accidents can happen in any type of boat at anytime.  We all try our best to avoid them, and in most cases, we can go our whole boating career without an accident.  Generally speaking, boating accidents do not occur as often as auto accidents (probably because there aren't as many boats on the water).  Now, I have to say that I am a little bias.  I am going off of information that know about my boating region, north Texas.  Though I don't have any information about it, it is likely that there are more accidents in areas with higher concentrations of boating traffic such as Florida.

Did you know.....

  • 58% of fatal accidents occurred in open motorboats
  • 19% of fatal accidents involved canoes and kayaks
  • 10% of fatal accidents involved cabin cruisers
  • 7% of fatal accidents involved jet skis (but make up 30% of all accidents that cause injuries)
  • 7% of fatal accidents happened in rowboats
