Docking is the most important part of boating

We all know that the most important part of boating can also be the most difficult. In fact, a recent report from the Coast Guard showed that in 2013 there were 212 vessels involved in accidents while docking or departing. This number should actually be much higher as many accidents are not reported unless someone is injured. I know every year I see many accidents at the dock while on the lake.

Learning how to dock is the first thing that any new boat owner should learn how to master. I recently heard a phrase that regarded to flying and I adapted it to boating, "leaving the dock is optional, but docking is required". This is as accurate as it can get. Everybody can leave the dock, but at some point you are going to have to come back.

Please, learn how to handle your boat around the dock, both single handed, with a crew, and in the most stressful situation, with an audience.
