United States Coast Guard Statistics

Here are some statistics from the USCG about boating safety. These statistics were from the year 2012.


  • Every 2.5 hours someone is killed or injured in a boating accident.
  • Chance of drowning in a boating related accident
    • While wearing a life jacket - 1 in 66
    • While not wearing a lifejacket - 1 in 11
  • U.S. Boat owners who say they have never taken a boating safety course
    • 42.6% have never taken a boating safety course
    • 63.4% say they are very experienced
  • 56.9% of boating accidents are caused due to operator error, poor judgment, or inexperience.
